player. 57. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. NFC. North. Chicago Bears. 3

A groin injury may sideline David Montgomery for a game or two, and his snap count will surely be closely monitored when he is deemed ready to play. But when Fournette surprisingly became available, Bears head coach Matt Nagy said he was happy with the team’s running back situation as is.

First in line for more touches if Montgomery does miss games is Tarik Cohen. He has topped 70 catches in each of the last two seasons, but he’s an undersized passing down guy with a career-best 99 carries in a season and a striking lack of proficiency as a pass-catcher last year (5.8 yards per catch, 4.4 yards per target). After Cohen, wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson could see time at running back with undrafted rookie Artavis Pierce and Ryan Nall (two carries last year) filling out the current depth chart.

An expected short absence for Montgomery was an obvious sigh of relief for the Bears, and that news reduced the urgency to consider any available outside options. But Peterson is an interesting option that should be on their radar, and a return to the NFC North may appeal to him.
