The Bengals drafted Joe Burrow with the No. 1 overall pick because of his arm talent, but watch as his legs get him his first NFL touchdown.

Joe Burrow is going to throw for a lot of touchdowns during his NFL career with the Bengals. It’s unclear how many scores he’ll gain on the ground. No matter what, that’s how Burrow will always remember his first touchdown as a professional.

The former LSU signal-caller found paydirt on a designed quarterback draw in the first quarter of his team’s Week 1 matchup with the Chargers. Burrow scored from just over 20 yards out by showing surprising explosion as he made one cut to leave the Los Angeles defense in the dust. He was able to make it to the end zone without being touched by a single defender.

Burrow’s legs could be an unexpected asset, but his arm is still golden

Don’t expect Burrow’s first score to portend a sudden change in his game. He may be a better athlete than some opponents expect, but he’s still going to make his money throwing the football at the NFL level. This touchdown scamper may hold up as his longest run from scrimmage for quite some time.

It’s still a prime example of just how dangerous Burrow can be. He won’t be afraid to tuck the ball and run for first downs if opposing defenses drop too many players in coverage. Opposing defensive coordinators may have to think twice about playing a ton of man coverage against Burrow moving forward. At the very least, oncoming rushers will have to think twice before running past the rookie quarterback.

It may not have been the first career touchdown that Burrow expected, but neither he nor Bengals fans will give it back. They all just hope it’s the first score of many for the quarterback many people believe can pilot their franchise back into the playoffs.
