Jadeveon Clowney gets his first Tennessee Titans sack on Drew Lock.
The Tennessee Titans got an immediate payoff with Jadeveon Clowney on this Drew Lock sack.
The former No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft out of South Carolina has been reunited with his former Houston Texans defensive coordinator Mike Vrabel in Nashville. It was scheme fit and familiarity that brought Clowney to the Music City in 2020.
On Monday Night Football in Week 1, he’s already asserting his SEC dominance over Lock in the NFL‘s version of the Battle of Columbia.
Jadeveon Clowney is not a sack artist, but this play was special for him.
Being able to drag the opposing quarterback to the turf is not Clowney’s forte. He is at his best when he’s dominating in run defense and setting up his teammates to make plays in the backfield on the quarterback. It’s why he was a multi-time Pro Bowler with the Texans in the earlier part of his career. Now that he’s back with Vrabel, he might have another Pro Bowl in him for 2020.
Though it was a heads up play by Clowney to get the sack of Lock, it had more to do with him being in the right place at the right time than anything. It was not a smooth exchange between Lock and the Denver Broncos center on the snap. Clowney was largely left uncovered coming off the edge, as he swooped in and made the big play on the second-year starting quarterback.
Tennessee was a game away from reaching Super Bowl 54 last year. The Titans shockingly caught fire once the weather changed, as they made it all the way to the AFC Championship game as the No. 6 seed. They ran into the buzzsaw that is Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, but the Titans have the personnel in place to win the AFC South for the first time in over a decade.
By adding Clowney to an already strong pass rush, he might be what it takes to help get the Titans over the top and to the Super Bowl for the second time in franchise history. Tennessee has its competitive window wide open and needs to do whatever it takes to win as many games as possible for as long as running back Derrick Henry can carry them to the promised land.
Clowney’s first sack came in his very first half of Titans football, so you have to love that.
