Stephen Gostkowski is having a horrific night for the Titans
Stephen Gostkowski is having a really bad night in his Titans debut.
If first impressions are everything, there is no way Stephen Gostkowski will survive with the Tennessee Titans.
The veteran kicker had by far the worst night of his career on Monday, missing all three field goal attempts and shanking a point after attempt against the Denver Broncos.
The first miss was on Tennessee’s second drive from 47 yards out. He put it wide right.
The second could have put the Titans up by three with the game tied before the end of the first half. However, a Bronco got a hand on the 44-yard kick.
The third miss was on a 42-yard attempt. That one went wide left and again failed to break the 7-7 tie.
By the fourth quarter, the Titans had enough. Facing a 4th-and-goal at the Denver 1-yard line, Tennessee opted to go for it. The move paid off as Ryan Tannehill found Jonnu Smith for a touchdown.
That’s when Gostkowski’s night went from bad to much, much worse. He lined up for the point after attempt and pulled it wide left.
Stephen Gostkowski’s misses cost the Titans dearly.
The Titans immediately regretted all of Gostkowski’s missed opportunities and the missed PAT in particular. The Broncos stormed down the field to score a touchdown and take a 14-13 lead.
Gostkowski was a two-time All-Pro First-Teamer and four-time Pro Bowler for the New England Patriots. In 14 seasons, he hit 87.4 percent of his field goal attempts and 98.3 percent of his extra points.
As he so often does, Bill Belichick must have known what the future for Gostkowski might be. After the kicker suffered a hip injury in 2019, the Patriots released him the following spring.
Gostkowski went on to sign with the Titans on Sept. 3, reuniting with his former Patriots teammate Mike Vrabel. There will likely be an awkward conversation between the two after the game.
