College football upset alert No. 1: UCF Knights

Rank: 14 | Opponent: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets | Time: Saturday, Sept. 19, 3:30 p.m. ET

Dillon Gabriel stepped up for the UCF Knights when the team needed him most last season. There were injury-created concerns at quarterback and the then-true freshman came in and performed at an extremely high level, throwing for over 3,600 yards and leading the team to a 10-3 record on the year.

Having said that, UCF has not played a game yet in the 2020 season and comes into the year with a number of serious questions about their roster. They have Gabriel and a stout trio of running backs but their wide receiver group is almost entirely unproven at this point. Moreover, they still need the defensive line and, less so, the linebackers to come into their own.

Make no mistake, the Knights’ Week 3 opponent, Georgia Tech, isn’t a world-beater, though they did upend Florida State in a tooth-and-nail victory last week. However, they have a true freshman, Jeff Sims, at quarterback and are still transitioning to Geoff Collins offense while also getting more talented recruits in the building.

With that said, they have been recruiting ACC-caliber talent to some degree and it showed in limited Florida State to just a hair over 300 yards of offense. If UCF comes in with rust and playing on the road in Atlanta, the Yellow Jackets could make a real statement and Sims could make his mark with another hard-fought upset win.
