The Charlotte Hornets are providing rides and childcare on Election Day
The Charlotte Hornets are doing their part for Election Day, providing rides and childcare for voters who need it in November.
The Charlotte Hornets are following the example of other professional teams around the country, helping out with polling and giving rides and childcare services to voters who need them, per The Charlotte Observer, as the presidential election looms.
With North Carolina expected to be somewhat of a battleground state in the upcoming election, the Hornets are ensuring that voters will be represented amid controversy regarding voter suppression and election interference.
NBA teams are taking concrete action to support voting access
The development is just the latest action in favor of social justice reform from the NBA, a topic that has taken center stage during the 2020 playoffs after protests regarding police shootings of unarmed black individuals like George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Jacob Blake.
With racial inequality still rampant in the United States and the COVID-19 pandemic still taking lives and damaging the economy, voter turnout will be crucial to making a difference, and teams like the Hornets should be lauded for their efforts.
Providing rides and childcare is simply going above and beyond other teams’ efforts, as the Hornets seem truly committed to making sure that fans are able to make it to the polls by any means necessary.
Other teams have led voter registration efforts, per USA Today, while the Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings, Los Angeles Clippers, and Detroit Pistons have announced plans to convert their facilities into polling locations on Election Day in order to prevent long lines at other polling locations and potential voter suppression.
According to The Charlotte Observer‘s story, Hornets owner Michael Jordan has planned the comprehensive efforts as a way of supporting the black community and recognizing that recent events have represented a turning point in the fight for social justice in the United States.
While some owners might make empty statements in support of social justice initiatives, Jordan has shown that he is willing to commit the time and money to truly make a difference in a society still reeling from a pandemic and continuing the right for racial equality.
