10. Shane Buechele, QB, SMU

SMU found themselves in a shootout with North Texas on Saturday night and Mustangs quarterback Shane Buechele looked at home. While his running back Ulysses Bentley IV had 227 yards and three scores, the quarterback had himself an even bigger day as he went 24-of-33 for 344 yards and four touchdowns while also adding 29 rushing yards and an additional trip into the end zone to his credit.

After that type of performance, Buechele would likely be higher than No. 10 in the Heisman rankings had his debut against Texas State shown less rust. In that game, the Texas transfer had 367 yards and a touchdown but threw two picks. Still, with over 700 yards and six total touchdowns on a 2-0 SMU team, the quarterback is at least trying to insert himself into the conversation.

9. Tyler Allgeier, RB, BYU

Seeing how BYU hasn’t played since their 55-3 shellacking of Navy on Monday, Sept. 7, it’s pretty easy to forget how dominant the Cougars offense (and defense, for that matter) were in their season-opener. But in that game, sophomore running back Tyler Allgeier was an absolute star as the youngster took 14 carries for 13 yards and two touchdowns, torching the Midshipmen for an impressive 9.4 yards per carry.

Allgeier would’ve had a great chance to submit a sleeper bid in the awards conversation in Week 3 as the Cougars were initially slated to face a sneaky Army team. However, that game was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns. Subsequently, we’ll have to wait until Week 4 to see the running back try and remain in the mix beyond his Week 1 showing.
