Quinton Dunbar is responsible for Cam Newton’s first Patriots interception.

It’d been an offseason for both Cam Newton and Quinton Dunbar, that’s for sure.

While Newton was cut by the team who drafted him No. 1 overall out of Auburn back in 2010, Dunbar was in a heap of trouble with former New York Giants defensive back Deandre Baker. Fate would have it Newton and Dunbar’s paths would cross on Sunday Night Football in Week 2, as Dunbar handed Newton his first interception as a member of the New England Patriots.

Will this play end up being what decides this primetime football game?

What makes this play significant is the Seattle Seahawks ended up scoring a touchdown after the Dunbar interception of Newton. Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has been a machine these first two weeks of the season. Though he has never received a single vote for NFL MVP, this just might be his year to win the thing. Seattle could emerge as the best team in the NFC this season.

In the Pete Carroll era, Seattle has usually won with defense. While the offense might be better than the defense for once in Seattle, it’s not that far off. The Seahawks still have a future Pro Football Hall of Famer at linebacker in Bobby Wagner rocking the green dot. If Dunbar and the Seattle secondary can make timely plays like the one he did on Newton, they’ll be in good shape.

Now that Newton got his first Patriots pick out of the way,  maybe he can play a little more free?
