It’s unlikely that he personally cares, but Mahomes went through a whirlwind of temporary movement regarding MVP Stock Watch during Week 2. The Chiefs flirted with a loss to rookie quarterback Justin Herbert and his Los Angeles Chargers. Herbert played beyond his years and damn near did the unthinkable in his first career start — topple Patrick Mahomes in a duel.

But Mahomes would have nothing of the sort. He tied the game in the fourth quarter on a 54-yard missile to speed merchant, Tyreek Hill. The Chargers then hung around and co-authored one of the best games on the schedule during Week 2. In the end, Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker daggered Los Angeles with a 58-yard game-winning field goal in overtime.

Butker actually kicked and made the field goal three times due to penalties and timeouts.

As for Mahomes, he registered 302 passing yards and two touchdowns. He also used his feet to accrue 54 rushing yards. When it looked like the Chargers may score the upset, Mahomes’ candidacy for this list could have dropped to rung No. 5, mainly due to a limited sample size through just two games. Instead, it was vintage Mahomes scripting another improbable victory.

In Week 3, the Chiefs visit the Baltimore Ravens in what figures to be an AFC Championship teaser.
