Mitch Trubisky finally got benched, and Twitter is lit
The Chicago Bears finally said enough to Mitch Trubisky, and Twitter has lost its collective mind in relief.
Chicago’s long, civic nightmare has finally been ended. The Bears have benched Mitchell Trubisky.
In the midst of a 26-10 deficit (at the time of this writing) to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday afternoon, head coach Matt Nagy went to Nick Foles midway through the third quarter. Before being benched, Trubisky threw a horrendous interception on his own side of the field.
For the game, Trubisky was 13-of-28 for 128 yards with a touchdown and the aforementioned pick. Despite Chicago being 2-0 on the young campaign, Trubisky was largely poor, throwing a pair of interceptions against the New York Giants last week after being horrid for three quarters in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions.
Nagy’s decision to bench Trubisky made immediate waves in the social media sphere, with fans and analysts chiming in across the country:
It’s hard to see Chicago going back to Trubisky after inserting Foles into the game. At this juncture, Foles is signed for the next three seasons with guaranteed money going through the 2022 season. Meanwhile, the team declined the fifth-year option on Trubisky this offseason, meaning he will hit free agency at the end of the year.
It came apart quickly for Trubisky. He led the Bears to a 12-4 record and NFC North crown in 2018, but fell to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card round. After going 8-8 and being offensively inept last season, Trubisky came into the season on notice. He hasn’t answered the call.
