It’s fair to wonder if O’Brien is a better coach than he is General Manager. It’s also fair to point out that the distinction doesn’t really matter to the Texans. O’Brien deserves responsibility for the team’s failings in terms of both personnel and tactics.

The roster-altering move to deal away DeAndre Hopkins clearly hasn’t worked out. It might have saved Houston some money and salary cap space, but it robbed Deshaun Watson of his most talented receiver.

The team’s inability to stop anyone from scoring has been an even bigger for O’Brien in 2020. The Texans’ defense has given up 34. 33 and 28 points in their three losses to open the season. They have faced three elite offenses to start the year, but it doesn’t change the cold reality that Houston is 0-3.

That makes the Texans an extreme longshot to make the postseason. That’s not acceptable given the fact that they’re blessed with one of the best quarterbacks in football. Watson deserves a better front office and coaching staff. It’s only a matter of time before Houston’s ownership comes around to that way of thinking.
