The Vikings and Texans are both winless teams, but Dalvin Cook’s physical TD run added insult to injury for Houston in Week 4.

Vikings fans haven’t had a ton to celebrate this season, but the play of running back Dalvin Cook has been a relative bright spot for Minnesota. His punishing touchdown run against the Texans was a perfect illustration of Cook’s intriguing combination of power and speed.

Cook started his run inside where he broke a minimum of three tackles before bouncing the paly outside to find space. Once he got moving on the perimeter, the former Florida State star became impossible to stop. He polished off his touchdown run by stiff-arming a Texans’ defensive back into oblivion. It’s a play that will electrify Vikings fans while also sending Texans’ supporters into even further despair.

The score helped Minnesota get off to a 17-3 halftime lead against the winless Texans. The loser of the Week 4 matchup will face long odds if they want to climb back into the race for a playoff berth. Even at 1-3, the winner will need to play much better football if they want to crash the postseason.

Cook’s intense run shows that the Vikings, at the very least, haven’t given up on Mike Zimmer and his coaching staff. They entered the year as many people’s favorites to win the NFC North. The Packers have sprinted out to a big lead in the division, but Minnesota still has the talent to compete for a Wild Card berth if they can get things back on track.

The more Cook can take control of the offense the better off everyone in Minnesota will be. Kirk Cousins doesn’t have the talent required to be a transcendent player at the quarterback position. When healthy, Cook does have a chance to be one of the most productive running backs in the league. Time will tell if he can do enough to help the Vikings recover from their nightmare start.
