Freddie Freeman wants to stay in Atlanta with the Braves. All it would take is an extension.

Freddie Freeman has every intention of staying in Atlanta. That much is clear after his recent comments.

“I think Alex (Anthopoulos) and everyone knows, and the fans know, this is where I’d love to stay,” Freeman said according to David O’Brien of The Athletic.

“This is my home. This is all I’ve ever known. I know I only have one year left (on his contract). We’ll see how it goes. But this team is built to win for a long time and I know that. It’s going to be a good ride. Hopefully, I can be a part of it.”

This should be the simplest extension decision the Atlanta Braves will ever have to make.

Freddie Freeman and the Braves should be able to get an extension done

The Braves still have work to do in 2020. They took care of the Cincinnati Reds in the NL Wild Card series, with a Game 1 walk-off from Freeman, and can now look forward to a date with the Miami Marlins in the NL Division Series coming up on Tuesday.

Much of Atlanta’s success thus far is owed to Freeman.

Baseball Digest just voted Freeman the Major League Player of the Year after he stormed through the 2020 season with a batting average of .341, 13 home runs and 53 RBI. He was third in the National League in hits and walks while finishing second in batting average, RBIs, on-base percentage and slugging percentage.

Simply put, Freeman was outstanding in 2020, helping the Braves to a 35-25 record and the NL East title.

Freeman isn’t a one-season wonder either. He’s consistently performed for Atlanta since he joined the clubhouse in 2010. Now 30 years old, he’s earned an extension with his play. The Braves would be wise to give it to him.
