Aaron Judge tried to make a home run-saving catch at the wall, but the wall won.

As he approached the wall hoping to get under a deep fly ball from Austin Meadows, Aaron Judge might have imagined himself matching Cody Bellinger’s stunning catch from Game 2 of the NLDS.

Maybe it played out behind his eyes, leaping, glove outstretched, denying the home run with a highlight-reel catch.

Judge would have cast himself as the hero right up until his head crashed into the overhanging wall at Petco Park, sending him crashing back to earth in both the literal and figurative sense.

All of that is summed up with one word: Ouch.

Aaron Judge bonked his head while trying to deny a Rays home run

That lowlight will stay with Judge for a while, surely with a painful bump on the head to accompany the shame. The question is whether he’ll get the chance to make more plays in the outfield as the playoffs continue.

The New York Yankees were leading 1-0 in the fifth inning before Meadows scored for the Rays on that home run, ending their frigid 0-for-32 streak. With the game tied going into the final innings, both teams are fighting for their lives and a place in the ALCS against the Astros.
