Barcelona could ruin Everton’s hopes of winning a Premier League title
Ronald Koeman didn’t lift Everton to new heights during his tenure in Merseyside, but he may do even more damage to the club at Barcelona.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s electric start to the Premier League campaign is raising eyebrows all over Europe. The list of admirers for the Everton star includes his former manager, Ronald Koeman. If Barcelona decide that Calvert-Lewin is the right player to lead their line into the future, it could prove disastrous to the Toffees’ hopes of securing a Premier League title.
At the moment, the Spanish press is already working to tie Koeman together with his former player. According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona’s current manager deserves a significant share of the credit for Calvert-Lewin’s current form. That’s a stretch by any means of logical examination, but it does illustrate the sort of appeal that the player already has all across the continent.
Would Barcelona really make Everton an offer for Dominic Calvert-Lewin?
It’s only a short leap to envision reports of Barcelona plotting a reunion between Koeman and the young English striker. Everton are in great form at the moment atop the Premier League table. That does not, however, mean they are equipped to stop the Spanish giants in the transfer market. Barcelona have the ability to lodge a transfer offer that the Toffees simply cannot refuse.
The key for Everton will be to lock Calvert-Lewin up to an airtight new contract at the earliest possible opportunity. Simply put, the five-year deal he penned back in March of this year is already out of date. The English club need to work hard to increase his wage packet to a level that prevents Barcelona from blowing him away with a lucrative offer.
Barcelona, of course, aren’t the only club Everton need to be concerned with. Other English clubs like Manchester could arguably pose an even greater threat in the near future. The lesson for Everton here is that they cannot afford to hesitate. If they provide a richer club an opening to swoop for Calvert-Lewin, their chance to climb the Premier League table on a permanent basis may be lost forever.
