2. Patriots defense subdues the Broncos hopes of getting to 2-3 on the season

The door to the infirmary has opened. Slowly but surely, members of the Denver Broncos are walking through it and returning to the field. This Patriots-Broncos matchup was slated to occur in Week 5, but the novel coronavirus had other plans.

Second-year quarterback Drew Lock could be ready in time for his first date with Bill Belichick. His injury status is not firmly known, but the extra week obviously aids his recovery timetable. Also, halfback Phillip Linsday is said to be ready after a turf toe ailment. It means that Denver’s ferocious tandem of Melvin Gordon and Lindsay is ready to do what was originally intended — make Lock’s life easier.

For Week 6, though, Bill Belichick stands in the way at his house in Foxborough. The Patriots are a .500 ballclub after failing to upend the Chiefs in Week 4 because of silly quarterback play. Watching Tom Brady walk away will do that to a franchise.

To keep pace with the Buffalo Bills, New England needs a win. If the Broncos were close to fully healthy, this game would probably be a nailbiter. But the Patriots are borderline desperate as to keep up with the Bills. A banged-up Broncos team — in New England — is an easy mark.

The Patriots will slow down the Broncos offense.
