Melvin Gordon was cited for a DUI late Tuesday night.

The Denver Broncos received a bye this past weekend due to positive COVID-19 tests from the New England Patriots. The preparation is now underway for the matchup that will take place this upcoming Sunday. Unfortunately, a negative story has emerged surrounding running back Melvin Gordon.

Gordon was reportedly cited for both a DUI and speeding late Tuesday night in Denver. He now has a scheduled court appearance November 13. The Broncos released a statement Wednesday afternoon that was short and to the point.

Melvin Gordon cited for DUI amid up-and-down start

Gordon had his biggest game of the season in Week 4 against the New York Jets on a Thursday night. He ran for 107 yards and two touchdowns as the Broncos finally picked up a victory in Gordon’s first season in town.

Getting a DUI does not mean Gordon will be written off by the Broncos. However, he will likely face a suspension from the NFL over the matter.

This is an unfortunate situation and the good news is it appears Gordon made it out without injuring himself or others. Now he will have to face a punishment for his actions. That is fair.

Gordon signed a two-year, $16 million deal with the Broncos this past offseason with $13.5 million of that sum being guaranteed. He will now need to prove the team was smart to make that decision by staying out of future trouble and also performing on the field.

Gordon has only been a 1,000-yard runner once in his career. Missing time in 2020 will hurt that quest once again. Losing time due to a possible suspension hurts the team as much as it hurts him and coming back from that will take some real maturity.
