Florida head coach Dan Mullen announced he tested positive for COVID-19 as the Gators continue to deal with a wave of infections in their program.

Dan Mullen is the latest college football head coach to come down with COVID-19.

The Florida head coach announced his positive test on Saturday on Twitter, thanking Gator Nation for their support of the program during a difficult week.

Unlike Alabama’s Nick Saban, who was cleared to coach against Georgia after a false positive sent him into isolation earlier this week, Mullen’s test has been confirmed as real.

Positive COVID-19 tests forced the cancelation of this weekend’s Florida vs. LSU game after the Gators reported more than 20 infections. The high numbers of unavailable players took them under the SEC threshold of 53 players required.

Dan Mullen had to eat his words about having fans in the stands

The awkward part of Mullen testing positive along with so many of his players is how he advocated for fans to return to The Swamp en masse despite the ongoing pandemic.

“Absolutely want to see 90,000 in The Swamp,” Mullen said after Florida lost to Texas A&M with Aggies’ fans in the stands in College Station. “Hopefully, that creates a home-field advantage for us next week because now we passed a law in our state that we can do that. We want our students out there cheering us on to give us that home-field advantage.”

Obviously, not being able to play a game at The Swamp this weekend because of a COVID-19 outbreak within the football program is pretty solid proof that it would be a bad idea to stuff so many fans into a stadium at this point.
