Heisman watch: Trevor Lawrence wrecks Georgia Tech, Mac Jones eviscerates Georgia
Heisman Trophy candidate No. 6: Najee Harris, RB, Alabama
Did Najee Harris have a world-beating game in Alabama’s victory over Georgia to cap off Saturday in Week 7? Not exactly. The veteran running back for the Crimson Tide rushed for just 4.9 yards per carry, toting the ball 31 times for 152 yards and a touchdown. But while that may be the case, the running back has simply been going about his business week after week and his season-long totals through four games are quite eye-popping.
Through the 4-0 start with Bama, Harris has 83 carries for 498 yards and 11 rushing touchdowns while also adding 86 receiving yards to his credit as well. With a player scoring as often as Harris is — even if the Alabama offense is still predicated on the deep-passing attack — he’s going to have a strong case to be a finalist for this award.
Heisman Trophy candidate No. 5: Kyle Trask, QB, Florida
The Florida Gators suffered an upset loss to Texas A&M last week and then had their Week 7 game against LSU postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak. But the loss shouldn’t diminish what quarterback Kyle Trask has done to start the season. After all, it’s not his fault that the defense, an often strong unit in Gainesville, has been an outright liability amid the team’s 2-1 start.
Regardless, Trask has been a beast to start the season, completing 71.8 percent of his passes for 996 yards, 14 touchdowns and one interception. Trask burst onto the scene last year and was touted as the savior of the Gators offense and he’s only looked the part more and more with each passing week in the 2020 season. If he can continue to dice up SEC defenses at this rate, he’s going to remain in the Heisman race until the very end.
