Heisman watch: Trevor Lawrence wrecks Georgia Tech, Mac Jones eviscerates Georgia
Heisman Trophy candidate No. 2: Mac Jones, QB, Alabama
On an offense loaded with NFL-caliber talent, who would’ve guessed that Mac Jones, a player who many people doubted and/or questioned coming into the 2020 season, would be the brightest shining star? And in case you thought that he was just racking up stacks against inferior SEC competition prior to Week 7, he made his strongest statement yet against a high-caliber Georgia defense.
After throwing an interception on his first pass of the night, Jones was nearly flawless for the rest of the outing. He completed 75 percent of his passes (24-of-32) for 417 yards with four touchdowns. Jones now has over 1,500 yards passing with 12 touchdowns and only two interceptions through four games and a perfect start for the Crimson Tide. As of right now, if anyone is going to challenge Trevor Lawrence, it’s Jones.
Heisman Trophy candidate No. 1: Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson
As mentioned, Lawrence came into the week as the Heisman Trophy frontrunner and he only solidified his case to be in that position further. The Clemson quarterback threw his first interception of the season and the first since this time last season but even that can’t put a damper on the dominant outing he submitted against the Yellow Jackets in Atlanta on Saturday.
The eventual No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft only played one half but still went 24-of-32 for 404 yards and five touchdowns. And it wasn’t just the raw numbers — Lawrence looked the part of a superstar in his efforts, making one pro-caliber throw after another. If he’s going to play like this and produce at this level from here on out, no one is going to catch the Tigers star.
