Could Mac Jones be the quarterback of the Bears in 2021?
By Mike Luciano
Will Mac Jones be a worthwhile move for the Chicago Bears next season?
The Chicago Bears might be in first place in the NFC North, but that doesn’t change the fact that this team is in need of a quarterback to lead Matt Nagy’s group for the next decade.
Crossing their fingers for Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, or Trey Lance might be a bit of a pipe dream, but the Bears might be able to find their next stud quarterback later in the first round in Alabama’s Mac Jones.
Jones has absolutely torched opposing secondaries this season, lighting up No. 3 Georgia to the tune of 410 yards in a game that might’ve solidified the Tide as the best team in the country.
Mac Jones is playing himself into the first-round conversation
While he may not be the athlete that Tua is, Jones is showing off that his arm talent and downfield accuracy are every bit as good as Tagovailoa showed last year. While he came into the season a complete unknown, there is a high likelihood he earns himself the title of fourth-best quarterback in the 2021 draft and sneaks into the first round.
The Bears are currently 5-1, as Chuck Pagano’s tough defense and Foles‘ efficient, if uninspiring, passing has them in first in the division. However, Foles’ huge contract is not on par with his play on the field, and the Mitch Trubisky era has come crashing to the ground. A new signal-caller is needed, and Jones will finally give Nagy a quarterback he can trust to go deep down the field.
Jones has some flaws in his game to iron out, but the fact that he has stepped right into Tua’s shoes at Alabama and is performing at almost exactly the same clip with minimal resistance bodes well for his NFL future. Chicago might finally have their quarterback of the future if they manage to snag Jones.
