20. Lavonte David gets overpaid by the Bengals

The Bengals aren’t a team with a storied history of spending big on free agents, but they want to maximize their roster talent while Joe Burrow remains on his rookie deal. That’s excellent news for David as he hits free agency.

Cincinnati has offensive needs to fill, but their defense is short on playmakers in the front seven. David has been exceptionally productive during his time in Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers understand that production, but may not be willing to meet his asking price when he hits the open market.

That lines David up to be overpaid by the Bengals. The reason he won’t be worth his next contract is that he’s not an elite player. Those are the only linebackers that should receive massive deals in free agency. Look for the Bengals to mess up this general rule of NFL economics.

David will be a good player for the Cincinnati defense, but his contract is going to look ugly for the team’s front office for years to come. His departure will hurt Tampa Bay as well, but they’ll find a way to spend the money in a better fashion.
