18. Trent Williams runs it back with the 49ers

Williams will be 33 years old next season but he’s played good football for the 49ers since the team rescued him from his tortured time in Washington. He’s not going to get a long-term deal given his advanced age, but San Francisco will see real value in bringing him back into the fold in 2021.

Any quarterback the 49ers go with moving forward needs to have his blindside protected. Williams can still do that as an above-average NFL starter. Guys like that always find a way to get paid in free agency.

That’s why San Francisco will be forced to give Williams a multi-year contract. They’ll try to get away with giving him a one-year deal at an above-market rate, but this is one player who is too smart to fall for that gambit.

Instead, look for Williams to sign a three-year deal to extend his stay with Kyle Shanahan’s team. The total value of the contract won’t raise eyebrows around the league, but it will set Williams up nicely to continue to earn at a high level during the twilight of his career.
