Chelsea face Sevilla at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, Oct. 20. Here’s all the info you need to watch.
The Champions League group stage starts on Tuesday with Chelsea hosting Sevilla at Stamford Bridge. The Blues are in the Champions League for the 15th time in the last 17 seasons. Sevilla return to the Champions League for the first time since the 2017-18 season when they were knocked out in the quarterfinal by Bayern Munich.
Chelsea have been very disappointing in the Champions League in recent seasons. The Blues have not reached the quarterfinals or later since 2014. After finishing fourth in the Premier League last season, Chelsea spent heavily in the summer transfer market, looking to make a run at the Premier League title and a deep run in the Champions League. The Blues signed Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz and Thiago Silva to bolster their squads. Werner, Ziyech and Silva have each made runs to at least the semifinals in recent seasons and that experience should help Chelsea. Domestically, Chelsea have gotten off to a slow start, picking up only eight points in their first five games. The offensive investments have paid off as the club has scored 13 goals. However, Chelsea have been shaky defensively, allowing nine goals and twice conceding three-goal games.
Sevilla qualified for the Champions League after winning the Europa League last season. It was the sixth time that Sevilla have captured the Europa League title since 2006. After winning the Europa League and forcing Bayern Munich to extra time in the Super Cup, Sevilla expect to get out of the group stage. After finishing third in La Liga last season, Sevilla have gotten off to a poor start, picking up only seven points in their first four games. The poor start has been made worse after star center-back Jules Kounde tested positive for COVID-19 and is not expected to play again until November.
