2. Columbus Blue Jackets

Columbus has become a perennial playoff team, but they’ve made it past the first round just once in the last four years. They’ve already been active this offseason, trading for Max Domi, signing Mikko Koivu and with rumored interest in Mike Hoffman (still available) and Taylor Hall (signed).

The Blue Jackets have $12.9 million in cap space right now, so they have room to take on Toews’ $10.5 million cap hit. But they also have some expiring contracts they could part with, with all of their first-round picks in their possession going forward and extra late-round picks in 2021 and 2022.

Columbus wants to move 34-year old Brandon Dubinsky’s expiring contract, with wrist issues likely to keep him from playing again and land him on long-term IR. The Blackhawks’ interest in taking on that $5.85 million might be worth exploration by GM Jarmo Kekalainen. Perhaps Chicago would have interest in one of the Blue Jackets’ goalies, as they were reportedly open to offers on both Elvis Merzlikins and Joonas Korpisalo.

Here’s a proposal that would send Toews to Columbus to play under John Tortorella.
