MLB Rumors: 5 players the Yankees will target in Free Agency
The Yankees simply cannot go into 2021 with the hope that Gary Sanchez will magically awake from his baseball slumber to fulfill his potential and become the team’s All-Star starting catcher. His malaise is unbearable for fans to watch and his production was even worse last year.
Fortunately, the Yankees do have a perfect solution available for their problems at catcher via free agency. Realmuto is in many ways the complete opposite of Sanchez. He’s a tireless worker that lead vocally and by example on the field and in the locker room. By signing him, the Yankees would acquire one of the game’s best players at his position and an excellent leader to help galvanize the locker room.
The obvious question is whether or not the Yankees will be willing to hand Realmuto the sort of massive contract he’ll be looking for in free agency. Rumors insist he wants to receive a contract that will guarantee him upwards of $200 million over the life of the long-term deal. It’s hard to believe New York will be significant players at that price.
There’s no certainty that any team will be willing to meet Realmuto’s original demands though. If he gets slightly more reasonable with his contract request, the Yankees could swoop in and solve their biggest issue by signing him. It’s not Realmuto or bust for New York in free agency, but he does represent the team’s biggest potential upgrade.
