Could the San Francisco 49ers end up switching things up at quarterback once next season rolls around?

After enjoying quite the stretch as one of the best teams in the NFC West, the San Francisco 49ers have looked incredibly rough during the 2020 campaign. Sure, injuries have have a negative impact on this team, but the 3-3 record is not what fans expected whatsoever.

Perhaps even more concerning has been the play of Jimmy Garoppolo. While he has battled injuries early on this campaign, his game has been completely off this fall and he hasn’t lived up to his massive contract. With the season feeling like it won’t result in a trip to the postseason, could Kyle Shanahan and company make a switch come next campaign?

The 49ers reportedly won’t shut the door in starting a new quarterback come 2021 in place of Jimmy Garoppolo

Per NFL insider Jason La Canfora, a source told him the team is in a ‘wait and see’ mode with Garoppolo and will continue to evaluate him. The quarterback’s play has certainly been inconsistent this year. He did suffer an ankle injury, but that’s no excuse for his up-and-down performances.

Thus far in 2020, Garoppolo has thrown for just 735 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions. Those aren’t the kinds of numbers the front office envisioned for him this season when they gave him his deal worth $137.5 million over five years.

The fact that San Francisco is already considering making a chance at quarterback tells you everything you need to know about Garoppolo’s play this season, which comes right after he led the team to the Super Bowl in 2019 and nearly helped the franchise bring home another Lombardi Trophy.

If Garoppolo doesn’t want to lose his starting job, he better wake up and starting playing up to his potential.
