Heisman watch: Mac Jones rolls, Justin Fields near-perfect, Travis Etienne makes history
Heisman watch candidate No. 8: DeVonta Smith, WR, Alabama
With Jaylen Waddle out of the lineup, it stood to reason that DeVonta Smith was going to play an even bigger role in the Alabama Crimson Tide offense. And in a 41-0 rout of Mississippi State in Week 9, that proved to be true. On track to set numerous program records in his senior season, Smith was an unstoppable beast on Saturday.

Smith finished the game with an unreal 11 receptions for 203 yards and four touchdowns. His trips to the end zone tied him with Amari Cooper for the most career touchdowns in Alabama history (31). Just this season, though, Smith has 56 catches for 759 yards and eight touchdowns. He’s virtually uncoverable at this point and shows no signs of relenting his spot in the Heisman rankings.
Heisman watch candidate No. 7: Najee Harris, RB, Alabama
Perhaps the most shocking part of the Crimson Tide’s dominant victory over Alabama was the fact that Najee Harris didn’t find his way into the end zone, something he’d been doing at an incredible clip prior to this game. Even still, the running back continued to be a steady dominant force that rumbled over opposing defenses.
Harris finished the win on Saturday with 21 carries for 119 yards along with six receptions for 36 yards. Despite not scoring against Mississippi State, Harris still has 14 rushing touchdowns to go with 714 yards rushing and 183 receiving yards. He may not steal all the headlines in this offense but he’s doing more than enough to remain a Heisman watch staple.
