Heisman watch: Mac Jones rolls, Justin Fields near-perfect, Travis Etienne makes history
Heisman watch candidate No. 4: Zach Wilson, QB, BYU
The BYU Cougars are quite possibly the quietest undefeated team in college football after nine weeks of action. Not only did they move to 7-0 with a victory over Western Kentucky on Saturday night in Provo but quarterback Zach Wilson continued to play at a phenomenally high level this season — even if his school-record streak of passes without an interception streak did come to an end.
Wilson wasn’t necessarily at his best but still completed 18-of-32 passes for 224 yards with three touchdowns through the air and added a rushing touchdown and 35 yards on the ground. At the helm of the unbeaten Cougars, Wilson has been wildly impressive and now has 26 total touchdowns on the season and over 2,200 total yards.
Heisman watch candidate No. 3: Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson
As mentioned, Trevor Lawrence was perhaps the biggest storyline of Week 9 in college football simply because he wasn’t on the field. Though you hate to penalize a guy for testing positive for COVID-19, you have to in a Heisman race that’s this tight. So with Lawrence not on the field and with Clemson barely surviving without him, he loses the top spot but does remain in the top three.
When on the field, there’s no denying just how good Lawrence has been this season. Completing 70.7 percent of his passes, the all-world quarterback has thrown for 1,833 yards with 17 touchdowns and only two interceptions while using his legs to find four more scores. The timing of his eventual return to the field will determine just where he ends up in the rankings for the award but, for now, you don’t want to penalize him too much after just one week.
