Heisman watch candidate No. 2: Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State

Raise the level of competition for Justin Fields and the Ohio State Buckeyes and they only answer the call. Their rout of Nebraska last week in the season-opener was impressive but a 38-25 win over No. 18-ranked Penn State on Saturday was even more son. And as you’d expect from the future top-five pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Fields was phenomenal for the Bucks.

Completing 28-of-34 passes, Fields threw for 318 yards with four scores and no interceptions. His rushing presence wasn’t felt this week after leading the team in the opener but he simply didn’t need to use his legs in this one. In just two games now, Fields has just shy of 600 yards passing with six passing scores and no picks along with 48 rushing yards and another score. He was expected to be a Heisman favorite and he’s not changing course at this point.

Heisman watch candidate No. 1: Mac Jones, QB, Alabama

Even with Waddle out of the lineup, there’s still no stopping Mac Jones at this point. The Alabama quarterback just keeps putting up numbers, keeps owning defenses and keeps winning. In the rout of Mississippi State, Jones went 24-of-31 for 291 and four touchdowns with no picks yet again. He’s been remarkably efficient, effective and productive for a player who came into the year with questions.

Despite how good Fields has been through Ohio State’s first two games, I can’t give him the edge in the Heisman watch rankings just yet. Jones has just been that good and has a larger body of work going in his favor. With just shy of 2,200 yards passing, 16 touchdowns and only two interceptions on the year, Fields might simply need Jones to slip up to overtake him. The bad news for Fields is that Jones has shown no signs of doing so.
