2. New England Patriots

Speaking of cap space for next year, even with the cap set to drop, the Patriots are in great position too (a little over $66 million, fourth-most in the league via Over The Cap). Bill Belichick has pointed to a lack of cap flexibility for a lack of major moves last offseason, with a $13.5 million dead money hit this year on Tom Brady after his departure a leading factor.

A lack of impact at wide receiver has become glaring for the Patriots over the last couple seasons. Free agent resources have not been devoted to the position, and an inability to identify difference makers in the draft has further eroded the talent level.

Beckham’s fit into “The Patriot Way” is a consistent and obvious question when considering New England’s potential interest in him. But similar questions came about Cam Newton when he could be tied to the Patriot and he was ultimately signed, and by all accounts he has fit in (Newton’s poor play of late is a separate conversation).

As mentioned, Beckham’s contract provides easy outs going forward. And it’s safe to assume a motivated Beckham, coming off a major injury, would be a dangerous player. Even if he’s not quite ready for Week 1, just over 10 months removed from that torn ACL, the Patriots should be a prominent offseason suitor for Odell.
