New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas

Michael Thomas can go down in history as one of the most prolific wide receivers of his era. Since coming out of Ohio State, Thomas has never caught fewer than 90 passes in a season, and he was one reception away from hitting 150 for the New Orleans Saints in 2019.

But thanks to injuries and disciplinary issues, Thomas has just three catches on five targets for 17 yards in one game played. That’s not very Thomas-like at all, and it’s led to speculation that Thomas could be available for a trade.

Since Thomas signed a five-year deal worth nearly $100 million and more than 60 percent of that deal guaranteed, he won’t be cheap to acquire. And since the Saints know they need a player like Thomas to win a Super Bowl in Drew Brees’ final go-around, they probably won’t want to trade Thomas, even if he’s been fighting teammates.

If there’s any chance under the sun the Philadelphia Eagles could acquire a player of Thomas’ caliber, though, Howie Roseman absolutely has to be on the phones. The state of the Eagles’ pass-catchers are dire. At this point, only reliable tight end Zach Ertz and big wide receiver Travis Fulgham, who looks like a legit starter in this league, are worth throwing it to. Greg Ward is too one-dimensional, as is tight end Richard Rodgers, and veteran wideout DeSean Jackson is already on the injured reserve.

Thomas would be the best wide receiver Carson Wentz has ever thrown passes to. The Eagles need someone who can move the chains, make something happen with the ball in his hands, and always get open. A wide receiver duo of Thomas and Fulgham isn’t bad, whereas a one-two punch of Fulgham and Ward is an absolute disaster.
