2. Golden State Warriors

The Golden State Warriors own the No. 2 pick, and your guess is as good as mine as to who they like. Trade rumors have swirled around that pick for a while since the Warriors are still in win-now mode, but demand to trade up or trade into this draft has been limited.

So assuming they keep the pick, how should the Warriors approach it? Grabbing someone who can help them immediately makes sense given their roster, but so does swinging for upside to prepare for the next era of Golden State basketball.

Okongwu would satisfy the former very well. The Bay Area needs a big right now, and Okongwu can play a role there from (almost) day one. This era of Warriors basketball has been headlined by shooting and a lack of investment in bigs, but that model gets a lot harder when you lose Kevin Durant.

There’s an argument he can check the latter box too. After all, he’s only 19 and already really good. It’s not crazy to think he has untapped potential that the film doesn’t even show. Okongwu could be killing two birds with one of Golden State’s stones.

Unless Golden State can load up on star power in the twilight of Stephen Curry’s prime, the frontcourt needs another fulcrum to go forward with. And even if they can nab an elite perimeter player, Okongwu is a great fit as a low-maintenance role player.
