NFL MVP stock watch: Russell Wilson and Patrick Mahomes 1-2
By Dustin Baker
2. Patrick Mahomes, QB (Kansas City Chiefs)
Last Week’s Ranking: 2nd
Highest Ranking of Season: 1st (-1)
2020 Stats: 2,315 Passing Yards, 21 Passing TDs, 1 INT, 66.9% Comp, 115.0 Passer Rating, 2 Rushing TDs
The New York Jets posed no threat to Kansas City Chiefs in Week 8. New York was 20-point underdogs, and the Chiefs treated them as such. Patrick Mahomes and Co. spanked the Jets by 26 points, furthering sending the Jets into their tankathon.
Mahomes threw for 416 passing yards and five touchdowns. It was video game stuff. There is no reasonable way for any quarterback to play better than he did vs. New York. As of last week, Aaron Rodgers led the NFL in QBR. But after Week 8, Mahomes stole the honors and now is tops in the business with an 85.4 QBR.
What’s more, it will get easier. Kansas City’s remaining opponents have a combined win percentage of .483. The most difficult games remaining on Kansas City’s schedule involve the Buccaneers and Saints.
Mahomes will likely remain in the top two on the Stock Watch until it’s time to make a formal prediction. He has just one man to surpass, but there is a problem. That particular man is supremely deserving of the top spot.
It will be a duel, to be sure.
