Jordan Travis is leaving his mark on the Florida State football record books.

Florida State football went in favor of the rush-oriented Jordan Travis over James Blackmon early in the season, and Mike Norvell’s decision has paid off. As is often the case in college football, the dual-threat option with a more than capable offensive mind in Norvell has produced for the Seminoles, despite what their record may show. The Noles are a program in transition, as Norvell is in his first season as the Florida State head coach.

Travis made an impact early against the Pitt Panthers, setting some school records in the process.

Pitt’s defensive line fell hard for the read-option, and Travis pulled the ball back and exploded through the hole for an 88-yard touchdown, the longest by a quarterback in Florida State football history. Once the Panthers’ second-level realized what was going on, Travis rolled into the secondary and past any capable Pitt defender.

Travis is already setting records for Florida State football

Travis is just a sophomore, but he’s setting himself up to be a potential program-changing talent should he develop into the type of player Norvell thinks he can be. The near 90-yard score was his fifth straight game with a rushing touchdown, which is the most consecutive contests with a touchdown on the ground in school history.

While the Panthers defense is missing a number of players due to injury and pro declaration, their defensive line has been dominant at times this year and is quick on the outside. To make such a deliberate fake and fool Pitt so decisively should not go so unnoticed by Norvell, and is just a glimpse at what Florida State can be when Travis is at his best.

Norvell just wishes that was more often, but so are the trials and tribulations of a young quarterback.
