Notre Dame and Alabama are big winners in the new college football rankings while former No. 1 Clemson drops after losing.

Touchdown Jesus is smiling today. After what feels like the biggest win for the Irish since Lou Holtz, Notre Dame controls their fate. The Irish offense exploded against a Clemson defense that was missing key players but certainly not lacking in talent, and definitely enough talent hang. In the end, it was a scoop-and-score by Notre Dame that made the biggest difference in the game.

It’s not all gloom and doom for the Tigers, though. D.J. Uiagelelei has put the college football world on notice. The next two years in Tiger Town are going to be reloads, not rebuilds. And on top of that, Clemson still has a shot to win the ACC and make it to the CFP.

Wouldn’t that be ironic? Notre Dame joins a football conference for the first time in its history, just so that it could have a season, and then, because it has to play a championship game, it ends up losing to a Clemson team closer to full-strength?

Clemson’s first regular season loss since 2017 is nothing but good news for the rest of the college football world. Alabama didn’t really need to worry, because they are going to run the table. But how about BYU and Cincinnati? If the Cougars or Bearcats think that Clemson would win on a neutral site against Notre Dame in the ACC Championship, that would mean a one-loss Tigers team would have to leapfrog both teams to make it to the Playoff.

Is it possible? Absolutely.
