Three years ago, Jameis Winston told the Buccaneers he wanted to “eat a W” against the Saints. On Sunday Night Football, he finally got to feast.

Back when he was the quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jameis Winston went a little too far with the creativity for his pregame speech against the Saints.

He called the team around him, stuck his fingers in his mouth and told them he was eating the “W” that his digits made.

The message fell terribly flat and he was rightly roasted for it.

The cool thing about life is that things sometimes come around for the best if you’re patient enough. On Sunday Night Football, it happened for Winston, now a quarterback for the Saints.

He got to eat that W.

Kudos to Winston for embracing the joke. He didn’t throw away his shot when finally got the chance to appear on national TV with a camera nearby.

Jameis Winston got the last laugh over his “eat a W” gaff

The Buccaneers drafted Winston No. 1 overall in the 2015 NFL Draft and he started 70 games for them over the last five seasons. While he had his moments, including a career-best season in 2019 in terms of yards and touchdowns, his penchant for turnovers was an issue. He had 30 interceptions last year.

Winston ended up with the Saints after Tampa Bay chose not to resign him. The NFC South rival signed him to a one-year deal as a backup to Drew Brees.

The quarterback didn’t play a huge role in New Orleans’ 38-3 drubbing of the Bucs but he did get in the game in garbage time, making his first appearance in a Saints jersey. He completed one pass for 12 yards. He also had the honors of running out the clock with kneel-downs.

His time with the Saints may come, but Drew Brees made sure he wasn’t needed more than that on Sunday. He threw four touchdowns for 222 yards to outduel Tom Brady in a game that is likely to prove critical to the NFC South title race.
