Scouting Report. Southwest. Pick Analysis. . San Antonio Spurs. 4. player. 29

For the first time in what feels like forever, the Spurs are staring down the barrel of a proper rebuild given the departure of most of their stars and Gregg Popovich’s advancing age. The combination of LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan, who has been the subject of trade rumors, will win the Spurs some games in the immediate future, but the amount of long-term building blocks on this roster isn’t very high. If the Spurs are unsatisfied with the development of Lonnie Walker, look for Maxey to join the fold at pick No. 11.

Maxey might set the world on fire from beyond the arc, but he plays like a shooting guard that Popovich created in a lab. Able to handle the ball and finish at the rim, Maxey is one of the best perimeter defenders in this draft given his long wingspan and tenacious attitude. If DeRozan does indeed get traded and vacates his starting role, San Antonio might be able to snatch a new starting shooting guard in the lottery this year given how pro-ready Maxey has looked.

With or without DeRozan, Maxey would spice up what has become a largely stagnant offense in San Antonio. The Spurs can get back to their winning ways if they ride with a backcourt of Maxey and Dejounte Murray for the next few years.
