NBA Draft 2020: 5 best fits for Tyrese Maxey
By Mike Luciano
Unlike most No. 7 seeds, Dallas’ long-term core is totally set in stone, as Luka Doncic taking over on the outside coupled with Kristaps Porzingis doing his thing down low has set the Mavericks up nicely for the next decade. The goal for Dallas this offseason should be surrounding Luka with more shooters, but to cut down on his hero ball and give him for kickout options when he drives into the lane. Tim Hardaway Jr. might be the starter at the two-guard spot right now, but he should be concerned about Maxey taking his job.
Doncic often operated as the team’s point guard, but that was partially out of necessity given the lack of backcourt depth in Dallas. Maxey would likely start of his career in Dallas as a sixth man that can attack the rim and spot up from deep, but he could easily become a starter if the Mavericks want to play small ball and put Hardaway at the three. Dallas likes to push the pace on offense, and that plays into Maxey’s strengths.
Dallas will challenge for a playoff spot again, and Maxey might require a touch of patience before he realizes his full potential. However, what he could be in that offense is mouth-watering.
