Alabama football: 6 Crimson Tide players that will be future NFL studs

What some people tend to forget is Alabama’s top-10 pick off its offensive line from a season ago this past spring did not play left tackle. Even though Jedrick Wills Jr. was assigned to block southpaw Tua Tagovailoa’s blind side from right tackle, it was Alex Leatherwood who took over for Jonah Williams at left tackle in the 2019 college season. He too has obvious first-round talent.

The two things that make Leatherwood such an intriguing prospect are his relentless competitiveness in pass protection and his complementary road-grader skills in the ground game. Starting at left tackle for two full seasons in the SEC is a great starting point for a high-end offensive tackle prospect. However, Leatherwood does tend to go off-script a little bit as well.

Sometimes he will go for a big block he has no chance of recovering from should it fail. So there is high variance when he is going up against another first-round talent, such as LSU Tigers pass-rusher K’Lavon Chaisson from a season ago. Though maybe not as gifted as Cam Robinson used to be for the Crimson Tide, there is a chance Leatherwood could be a more polished version of him.

As with Moses, Leatherwood should be a first-round pick, but will come off the board until the latter part of the first round. If a contending team needs an upgrade at left tackle to get to the promised land, there may not be a better selection this year to fulfill that than Leatherwood. Though still raw and a tad undisciplined, he will make an NFL offensive line better right away.
