. . Toronto Blue Jays. 1.. player. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. 39

The Blue Jays are lined up to be one of the more aggressive teams this offseason, and they kicked off free agency by bringing Robbie Ray back to the starting rotation.

As Semien’s agent cites teams who are willing to move their current shortstop to accommodate him, the Blue Jays stand out. They had reported interest in Andrelton Simmons at the 2020 trade deadline, and now that the former Angels shortstop is a free agent, they are a natural top suitor.

The Blue Jay would most easily move Bo Bichette primarily to third base short-term to make room for a shortstop acquisition, be it Simmons, Semien or … Francisco Lindor, if they want to try to go there. Toronto values versatility and they have plenty of infield flexibility. Cavan Biggio can play multiple positions (second base, third base and outfield), and in theory, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. can play both corner infield spots.

Simmons is a fine all-around player at a premium position, and if the ankle issues that have limited him the last two seasons can be left behind, he’s surely got plenty left. But Semien has more upside offensively, as evidenced by his 2019 campaign and his aforementioned finish to 2020. As the Blue Jays survey all options, Semien should be on their radar.
