New owner Steve Cohen says he is willing to spend big to win big

If new New York Mets owner Steve Cohen wants to make a big statement after making a big purchase, he needs to build a team that can challenge the Atlanta Braves in the division overnight. While the Mets have pieces like Pete Alonso, Jacob deGrom, Jeff McNeil and Noah Syndergaard, New York is going to need more firepower to compete with the likes of Atlanta in the NL East.

In years past, when the Mets spend big in free agency, it never works out. The only team that does a worse job than them at this shares their metro area and color scheme in the hopeless New York Knicks of the NBA. But the big difference here is Cohen is not James Dolan, or at least he is not a close facsimile to that ownership monstrosity just yet. By adding Springer, Cohen means business.

The hope is Springer will not fall off a cliff physically in his early 30s. The good news for the Mets is Springer will have multiple suitors and not bidding with themselves. What may also help him is leaving the American League for the National League. How many NL East pitchers have had to work around his awesome power from the right side of the plate all that often? Very few, if any.

Does adding Springer make the Mets the favorite to win the NL East? No, but it will help give the Mets’ rivalry with the Braves a tad more intrigue. Adding Springer makes the Mets more interesting, as they will be in the mix to fight for a Wild Card spot, maybe dethrone the Braves if Atlanta has a year from hell? The Braves will not, but the Mets can be second best in the NL East.
