Heisman watch 2020: Kyle Trask makes huge move on idle Justin Fields, Mac Jones
Heisman watch candidate No. 6: DeVonta Smith, WR, Alabama
When talking about Najee Harris, it was mentioned that two teammates are higher than him in these rankings and wide receiver DeVonta Smith is one of those. He was already a star in the Alabama passing offense regardless of any other circumstances. But when Jaylen Waddle’s season was prematurely ended due to an injury, that thrust Smith into an even larger role and he’s benefitted in regards to the Heisman race.
Smith has an incredible 56 receptions on the season already, taking those touches for 759 yards and eight touchdowns, all of which lead the Crimson Tide this season. For good measure, he also added a rushing touchdown early in the year. As the focal-point of arguably the most prolific passing offense in the country, it’s hard to see Smith giving up any ground in these rankings from here on out once Bama gets back on the field.
Heisman watch candidate No. 5: Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson
On the heels of Clemson’s first loss in what seems like an eternity, the Tigers were actually scheduled to be off in Week 11 and, when they return next Saturday for a matchup against Florida State, it’ll also signal the return of quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who missed the team’s last two games after testing positive for COVID-19. And he’ll be looking to make a final push to be in the Heisman race seriously.
When he’s been on the field, Lawrence has been lights-out. Even though he’s seen the second half sparingly this season, the quarterback has 1,833 yards passing with 17 touchdowns and only two picks to go with four rushing touchdowns as well. Missing the two games could ultimately cost him the award but a strong finish upon his return could lock up a finalist spot for the eventual No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
