Heisman watch 2020: Kyle Trask makes huge move on idle Justin Fields, Mac Jones
Heisman watch candidate No. 2: Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State
With the Big Ten season still getting rolling and Ohio State having only played three games, the Justin Fields Heisman Trophy run was just starting to gain steam. That makes it all the more frustrating for him and Buckeyes fans that their Week 11 game against Maryland was canceled due to a COVID outbreak within the Terrapins locker room. Because now he could be losing valuable time to make up ground.
Fields has been near perfect over the Buckeyes’ 3-0 start, completing 86.7 percent of his passes for 908 yards with 11 touchdowns and no interceptions along with two rushing scores. But in a season in which OSU was only set to play eight games and now they’ve had one of them taken away, you have to wonder how voters will weigh the size of the body of work for Fields.
Heisman watch candidate No. 1: Mac Jones, QB, Alabama
There are some people who would likely have Fields or even Trask ahead of Alabama quarterback Mac Jones in the Heisman race. To me, I don’t see how you can make that argument given what Jones has done this season. When you talk about production combined with team success, there is no one who has the body of work as Jones through 11 weeks in the 2020 college football season.
Completing 78.5 percent of his passes, Jones has thrown for 2,196 yards with 16 touchdowns and only two interceptions on the year while adding a rushing touchdown. And again, he’s on the best team in the nation, meaning that he’s often taking the second half off, either by just handing the ball off or taking to the sidelines. Until someone truly bests him or he drops off, Jones has to be the leading candidate to win the Heisman Trophy.
