NBA Free Agency 2020: 5 offseason targets for the Phoenix Suns
4. Jerami Grant
Jerami Grant fits in with the Suns’ timeline perfectly as a player who’s still young (26) but established enough to help them compete right now. The athleticism, defensive versatility and slashing ability he’d provide would be a boon to Phoenix’s playoff prospects, and his improvement as a 3-point shooter — 39.1 percent on 3.6 attempts per game over the last two seasons — feels sustainable.
Although he’s a poor mid-range shooter, his rim-rocking forays to the basket and floor-spacing as a 3-point threat would make him a great potential fit next to Deandre Ayton, especially factoring in his switchability and penchant for weak-side rim protection.
However, Grant may be one of the more coveted free agents out there, and the Denver Nuggets are understandably interested in bringing him back. Opting out of his $9.3 million player option, Grant is due for a handsome payday that should exceed $15 million a year. That’d be a hefty price for the Suns to pay with almost all of their remaining cap space, especially for a guy whose career 1.1 assists per game might not be the best fit in Monty Williams’ .5 offense that requires quick decision-making and some kind of passing ability.
