NBA Offseason 2020: 5 potential landing spots for Carmelo Anthony
By Mike Luciano
If Carmelo went back to the New York Knicks, it would solely be because of either money, the ability to potentially be the team’s leading scorer, or returning to a fanbase that loves him dearly. Anthony cannot spin this as a move that will get him closer to a championship, as the Knicks are an extremely young team with the misfortune of playing in arguably the toughest division in the NBA. However, the Knicks have room for growth, and Anthony could help this team get positioned for a more promising future while providing 15-ish points per game on the floor.
Anthony probably didn’t envision himself entering the “veteran leader who helps groom a future star” role, but he might be the perfect person to mentor RJ Barrett, who has a very similar style of play. Who better to teach him minor improvements that could help him get better while also handling the New York media spotlight than a guy who was right in the thick of it for six years?
Even if Melo wouldn’t end his career with a championship by making this move, he could end it by putting up 30 in The Garden, which is the image most fans will have of him anyway.
