Al Horford’s family is thrilled he’s been traded to the Thunder

Horford’s experience in Philadelphia evidently wasn’t a good one. Social media is always a tough place for the families of professional athletes. Fans and pundits alike will often come after the pros as if we’re right there with them in the locker room, when instead we have no idea what’s going on beneath the surface. Remaining silent while the Twitter-storm brews around them is a tough ask for some, and Al Horford’s family has opted to take a different approach.

Horford’s sister has long been his biggest fan, taking on Twitter trolls, even if they’re from the city he (at the time) calls home. The fact that she’d have an opinion on his trade to OKC isn’t surprising, but coming after 76ers fans is odd given the circumstances. Ironically enough, Horford is among the most quiet and classy players in the game.

Were 76ers fans unfair to Horford during his tenure?

The answer to that question is complicated. Horford was signed to play alongside Joel Embiid, signifying a strategy from a bygone era. Two bigs playing at the same time, complimenting each other perfectly, is too good to be true given the sharpshooters that reside all around the court these days. It’s far too simplistic, even given Horford’s shooting ability and rim protection.

Philadelphia also has Ben Simmons leading from the point. Simmons lack of perimeter playmaking was exposed when teams would crowd the paint with Embiid and Simmons crashing down low. It was a recipe for disaster, and something the Sixers front office should’ve seen coming.

Sixers fans, and the Horford family, got caught in the weeds. This was always going to be an unceremonious exit.
