3. Jeff Teague

Fred VanVleet is the best unrestricted free agent in this year’s class, but the options behind him at point guard are uninspiring. There isn’t a lot to distinguish between the rest of the lead guards hitting unrestricted free agency this offseason.

Teague is a veteran who should be getting more buzz. He’s miscast as a starter at this stage of his career, but he’s overqualified to be a primary offensive option for a good team’s second unit. His inconsistent perimeter shooting is going to turn certain teams off, but that won’t stop him from providing excellent value for a playoff team that needs to add a creator to take some responsibility away from their best players.

Scoring isn’t Teague’s only appreciable skill. He’s also an underrated distributor from the point guard position. He puts a ton of pressure on opposing defenses with his ability to beat his defender off the dribble. Once he gets by the first man he has a sincere willingness to find the open man with a quick pass.

Teague has made a healthy amount of money during his NBA career so it’s very possible he will shift his focus towards playing for a championship contender. Every elite team with a need for a backup point guard should consider inking him to a cheap deal. Don’t be surprised if he finds a way to become a valuable playoff rotation player for a team with legitimate title dreams.
