Mets: 3 free agents to sign and 1 to avoid this offseason
By Scott Rogust
Remember when Corey Kluber solidified himself as the most dominant pitcher in the AL during his tenure with the Cleveland Indians? Yeah, those were good times. In recent years, things have gone spiraling out of control for the former two-time Cy Young winner.
After his tremendous 2018 season, Kluber dealt with bouts of injuries ever since. In 2019, Kluber fractured his right arm after being hit by a Brian Anderson line drive and strained his oblique during a rehab assignment, ending his campaign after seven games. A change of scenery with the Texas Rangers didn’t change his luck around, as he pitched in just one inning before exiting with a torn teres major muscle in his right shoulder, which effectively ended his season.
We add Kluber to this list because a report from Metsmerized said that the Mets have shown interest in his services. Sure, it would be a great low-risk, high-reward option for New York, but it’s not something they should take a chance on, especially since Cohen wants the team to be in Los Angeles Dodgers territory of contention in the very near future.
The Mets acquiring Kluber would be a great idea…three years ago. In 2020 heading into 2021, it’s best they avoid him altogether. If they wanted to add a veteran pitcher, Charlie Morton would be a better option.
