Lakers eyeing veteran big man to replace Dwight Howard

Dwight Howard signed with the 76ers, and the Lakers need a replacement.

Howard’s resurgence in Los Angeles led to a new contract, and a repaired reputation. While Anthony Davis gets most of the minutes at the power forward and sometimes center positions, Howard received some starts in the playoffs to form a “Twin Towners” starting five for the world champion Lakers. Howard is by no means the player he once was with the Orlando Magic in his prime, but he’s a solid enough role player to contribute in Philly behind the like of Joel Embiid. Philadelphia traded Al Horford to Oklahoma City, giving them a clear void at the position.

Without Dwight in tow, the Lakers will have to make a corresponding move to repair their frontcourt depth. As it turns out, they already have someone in mind.

Gasol would be a perfect replacement for Howard

The former Defensive Player of the Year and three-time All-Star has taken a significant step back since receiving those accolades, but he’s more than capable as a depth big. In fact, the argument can be made that he’s better the Howard.

The Lakers have already managed to add to an already-impressive championship squad. The trade for Dennis Schroder gave them a replacement for Rajon Rondo, and adding reigning sixth man of the year Montrezl Harrell supplies LA with an elite scoring force off the bench. What’s not to love?

For now, they have a Dwight Howard-sized hole in the lineup, but it’s unlikely to last long.
